Denim Sustainability Efforts

Denim Sustainability Efforts

Hej!

As you may know, the methods used to make denim are traditionally very bad for our environment. Water usage alone for a pair of jeans is around 10.000 liters!

On my recent trip to Holland, I was introduced to two organizations that are trying to fight this development: The House of Denim Foundation in Amsterdam Houseofdenim.org and IF DENIM in Rotterdam Ifdenim.com

House of Denim Foundation

House of Denim Foundation is a non-profit organization from Amsterdam. Their mission is to connect and inspire Denim stakeholders, to provide platforms, to educate everyone on the topic and to find innovative production possibilities.

They also provide a lot of different sewing courses, where you can learn to make your jeans, bags, kimonos etc or how to upcycle / customize your old Denim pieces.

They are located in “Denim City” in Amsterdam, which is also home to The Denim City Store, where you can buy Denim items from sustainable brands such as the Swedish brand Nudie Jeans.

I can definitely recommend a visit!

IF DENIM

IF DENIM was founded by Sharifah and Yanto and is located in Rotterdam. They use repurposed jeans, old stock pairs and deadstock denim fabrics to create fantastic new items such a Denim jackets, interior decor, bags and even art! You are welcome to bring your own old jeans in return for a voucher.

IF DENIM items…

Our Fashion Tour participants loved this place and bought many cool items! I hope you too found this interesting and inspiring and will consider paying these great locations a visit.

Christmas Hygge with Glögg

Christmas Hygge with Glögg

Hej!

The winters in Scandinavia are long and dark, so the people there are naturally experts in creating cozy settings inside their homes with candles, mulled wine (Glögg) and other delicacies…

It is tradition to invite friends over for a cup of Glögg and some pepparkakor (Ginger Thin cookies). This is called “Glöggmingel”.

Well at our last Glöggmingel I made a bit more food than just pepparkakor… 😉

Do you want to try to make your own Glögg? It is easy! Here is a basic recipe (but I encourage you to experiment to find your own personal favourite):

Redwine Glögg

1 bottle of red wine (low quality is fine)

1-2 sticks of cinnamon

around 15 cloves

some orange peel

5 cardamom pods

1 dl sugar (or more or less depending on your taste)

1 dl vodka (amount also up to you;-)

Heat all the ingredients but do not boil. Serve with flaked almond and raisins.

Skal!

P:S: If you don’t like vodka you can use rum or cognac instead.

Your Glögg is ready!

Kram

IG Meetup “Fashion Drive”

IG Meetup “Fashion Drive”

On June 6th 2018, I organized a private tour of the Art exhibition “Fashion Drive” at Kunsthaus Zürich for my Instagram followers and friends.

It turned out to be a very interesting evening with much laughter and it was so wonderful to meet some more of my IG friends LIVE 🙂

Anna Buehler, who was our tour guide for the evening, informed us all about how fashion has evolved over the centuries and showed us examples of how this has been portrayed in art.

Jeanette, Nadia and Mira listening to Anna…

Jeanette and I enjoying the tour…

Some of the exhibits…

One of the sculptures from the regular museum stock fashionably dressed up for the exhibition…

This one, called “Metamorfosi” by Michelangelo Pistoletto, was of a more critical nature… We were reminded of Vivienne Westwood’s motto: “Buy less, choose well and make it last!”

Some examples of art on clothes by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood…

“Flow my tears I” by Mai-Thu Perret shows a copy of Elsa Schiaparelli’s skeleton dress made in collaboration with Salvador Dali. In the background the painting “La poudreuse” by Felix Vallotton.

Group Photo with fab friends 🙂

After the exhibition we were kindly invited for drinks in Bombay Bird’s Showroom, so that we could get to know each other better and also had the possibility to view and buy beautiful earrings, scarfs and quilts…

A BIG Thank You to everyone who participated, Anna for the great tour and Lipika from Bombay Birds for having us over 🙂

If you too are interested in visiting the fascinating exhibition “Fashion Drive” at the Kunsthaus Zürich, it is on until July 15, 2018. See www.kunsthaus.ch
